President: Spiros Manolas
Year: Junior
I joined SIAM because of my desire to create community amongst members of the AMS department at Stony Brook across all academic levels, as well as my desire to provide SBU students interested in Applied Math with a variety of professional development & social activities. I enjoy the AMS & MAT majors because of my passion for learning about math and its applications, and I chose my MEC minor because I am generally interested in research at the intersection of applied math and engineering. My current long-term academic and career goals are to pursue a PhD in Applied & Computational Math / Computational Science and Engineering, followed by a career either in academia, the national labs, or industry R&D. My research interests primarily lie in the development of numerical and computational algorithms to solve problems in the engineering fields. My favorite projects that I’ve worked on for SIAM so far have been our Undergraduate Research Workshop as well as our upcoming AMS Research Day. Outside of SIAM/academics, I like cooking/baking and am a big foodie!

Vice President: Wendy Calderon
Year: Sophomore
I chose to join SIAM to connect more to the mathematics community on campus, I wanted to learn more about the different areas of math that people partake in and what I could be able to contribute. This led me to running for Vice President because I wanted others to come and learn more about our community and enjoy it as much as I did. I enjoy the difficulties of my major, when I am so stuck on a single problem that I’ve been working on for hours at a time and then finally something works and I’m able to complete it. I truly enjoy that experience and feel as though that always happens when I’m working a math problem. Which is inevitably how I chose my major before coming to college I knew that math was my way to solve the problems in my community. I wish to use mathematical models and my problem solving skills to aid public policy and help my community. I love puzzling! Which ties into sitting hours on end trying to figure something out, but I’ve solved so many puzzles! My sister and I solved an 1000 piece puzzle when I was in high school. So far my favorite workshop/event we’ve done so far has been the Applied Math Research Workshop, I felt it was very informative and people showed a lot of interest in what we had to offer!

Treasurer: Nandini Goswami
Year: Sophomore
The wide range of opportunities offered by applied math from finance to machine learning made known by SIAM fascinates me and I can’t wait to help share it! I chose pure mathematics as my second major because I also enjoy drifting through its elemental beauty and abstraction. For now, I’m torn between the dynamic industry environment and the inquisitive but collaborative world of research. Something fun about me is that I play North Indian classical music on the violin and I speak French! MY favourite project with SIAM is the interactive journal club discussion on a paper on the overlaps between Indian classical music and mathematics.

Technical Lead: Viviana Rescalvo Orea
Year: Sophomore
I joined SIAM in order to broaden my coding skills in the mathematical field and share them with interested members. Additionally I enjoy spending time with the rest of the E-board as well as general body members! In my free time, I love listening to music, binge watching shows, and learning to crochet and play guitar.

Secretary: Catherine Ren
Year: Junior
Math has been my favourite subject since I began schooling, so I knew that I wanted to study some sort of math in college. I started in only AMS, but found that I wanted to see more proofs rather than just theorems, so I eventually became an MAT major as well. I am greatly enjoying number theory (MAT311) right now, and hope to enter graduate school and become a career mathematician. In my freshman semester, I joined SIAM for its biweekly journal clubs, discussing interesting papers at a level that was accessible for even me with barely any background in applied math. I wanted to be more involved in the planning of the club as well, so when the position of secretary opened up, I ran for it. Outside of academics, my primary hobbies are reading (anything I can get my hands on) and playing piano (primarily pieces from the late Romantic to Modernist periods).

Social Media Manager: Larab Khadim
Year: Senior
I wanted to join SIAM to allow me to network with likeminded people that share the same interest in applied mathematics as me. I think it is a great resource to help you navigate a career path in AMS. I ended up choosing my major because of my initial interest in mathematics and wanting to apply mathematical concepts in real life scenarios. One of my goals after graduating is to get a masters degree and then move on to working in the field of data analytics. A fun fact about me is that I like to do my own gel x nails.

Event Committee: Katia Idrovo
Year: Senior
Hello! My name is Katia and I joined SIAM because I wanted to be more involved within our AMS community at Stony Brook! In my free time I like to sew!

Event Committee: Sofia Castillo
Year: Sophomore
I wanted to join SIAM to be around likeminded individuals with similar mindsets on math and math education. I grew to love math over the years and seeing all of the members come together with this combined interest is truly inspiring. As for my future, I plan on getting a PhD in Astrophysics with a concentration in star evolution. I think having interdisciplinary experience during undergrad is extremely valuable. I get to converse with people who operate differently from me and who encourage me to see different angles of the world. When it comes to research, having these skills early on will help me tackle future research problems from all sides. Outside of school, I love to do pottery as well as listen to music and hangout with my friends!

Event Committee: Edik Harutyunyan
Year: Sophomore
I joined SIAM to connect with students who share a passion for applied mathematics and to help create engaging events that make math more accessible and exciting. As a Mathematics major, I enjoy exploring how mathematical models can solve real-world problems. Serving as a member of the Event Committee has allowed me to contribute ideas, strengthen teamwork skills, and support our community. Outside academics, I enjoy playing chess, basketball, and analyzing them.
